Families

with Children

If you have kids, this page is for you!

Can children be in the service?

Absolutely. We want children to be with their families in the mass. To make this easier, we have activity boxes that are age-appropriate: we have boxes for younger and older children. If you are new, choose a box that has the word, "friend." We can then get a box made up with your child's name. Additionally, be sure to pick up one of the children’s bulletins. They are aligned with the Gospel readings for the day and are filled with age-appropriate activities.

Restrooms?

A small restroom is located next to the church nave (main part of the church where worship occurs). As you head toward the altar area, the door to the hall leading to the restroom is on your left. After you go through that door, the restroom will be on your right. Additional restrooms are on the first floor in Pettway Parish Hall.

Do you have a nursery?

We have a nursery for children from newborn to age 5. There are two attendants, Mary Burgess and Lacey Bereth, who are available from 8:45 until the end of mass, normally around 11:30. You are welcome to have your child with you at mass as much (or as little) as you wish; it is fine to take your child to the nursery and back out during mass as you and the child need.

Where is a changing table?

There is a changing table in the first bathroom in Pettway Parish Hall. There is also a changing table in the nursery. The nursery is in a room next to the church nave (main part of the church where worship occurs.) As you head to the altar area, the door leading to the nursery area is on your left. As you go through that door, the nursery is straight ahead of you.

Is there a playground or play area?

Yes! Inside the church courtyard and through the gated entrance at the top of the plaza next to the church building, there’s a children’s play area with a swingset and a slide. Children should not play unsupervised.

Do you have Children's Formation?

Yes! We have Godly Play for children of all ages from 8:45-9:45 AM in Garrison Hall (the brick building opposite the main church building across the plaza). Godly Play is a Montessori-based program where storytellers tell scripture stories and then encourage children to ask questions about these stories and their faith. It's a unique approach to religious education that invites wonder, play, and discovery. Godly Play instructors are: Mary Hallenberg, Sue Lewis, Bethany Livingston, and Caroline Herndon.  There is a Confirmation Class for children aged 12 and up. Children who attend Confirmation Class must also attend mass in its entirety with their parents.

How else can children be involved?

We invite children to be involved in almost every aspect of Church of Our Saviour. You will see them playing outside, helping adults prepare for our hospitality hour after mass (Lemonade in the Shade or Cocoa in the Cold), and serving in the mass as torchbearers, acolytes, and thurifers!

What else do you have for families?

  • Family Night: Lasts about an hour, occurs once a month during the school year, this family fun event includes dinner and a program for both children and adults. Check the calendar for upcoming Family Nights!

  • Theology on Tap: Adults enjoy adult beverages, snacks, and light theological discussion (no degree in theology necessary) while a sitter watches the kids. Come out and enjoy!
